In my Reporting II
class at SMU, we were given the assignment to profile someone whose career we aspire to. I immediately asked Merritt Beck and she graciously accepted.
I have so much respect for Merritt as the founder of the blog The Style Scribe
and as the U.S. marketing director of rewardStyle. Out of the 7,000 bloggers
rewardStyle works with internationally, Merritt is counted amongst the 25
highest earners for 2011 and 2012. Did
I also mention she’s only 26 years old? Talk about beauty and brains!
I must have tried on
about 10 different outfits the morning of our interview. What do you wear to
meet a style blogger that women around the world gravitate toward?! Because I decided
it wasn’t socially acceptable to wear a ball gown to Starbucks at 10 a.m., I
settled on a sharp blazer, my trusty DVF top and jeans. Despite coming from a
haircut, Merritt didn’t disappoint (of course!) in a bejeweled sweater and
jeans.
Merritt couldn’t have
been sweeter and more willing to share her background, her advice for budding
fashionistas, and her own plans for quite the fashionable future. I only hope one
day I will be as happy and fulfilled by my life and career as Merritt is.

Merritt Beck’s favorite designers are
Tibi, Theory, Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler to name a few, but her first
fashion icons were a little closer to home. Growing up in Austin, Texas, Merritt
would play with her mother and grandmother’s classic Chanel flats. “I’ve always
been very close with my grandmother, as my sister and I spent a lot of time at
her house… She always let us play dress up (same with my mom). They both have
an incredible sense of style and have always had pretty things, so naturally I
was drawn to both of their closets,” Beck says.

An inspiration and love for the fashion
world emerged from her childhood playtime and today, Beck reigns as a top 25
blogger with her blog
The Style Scribe and as the marketing director for
rewardStyle.
